Many Palmetto bathrooms are small, well-used and older than their owners would like. We focus on fixing what's wrong underneath, then making a compact room work harder, one project or one stage at a time.

Bathroom remodeling in Palmetto often starts with one complaint: the bathroom is small, it's old, and something about it isn't right. Maybe the tile around the tub has started to loosen, or the floor gives a little near the toilet, or the room has never had a working exhaust fan. Palmetto's older neighborhoods are full of modest, well-built homes, and in many of them that bathroom is the only one in the house. That's why we work out the schedule before anyone picks tile.
Living through a remodel with one bathroom
In a one-bathroom house, the schedule matters as much as the design. Before demolition we'll walk you through which phases leave the room unusable and for roughly how long, and we sequence the work to restore the toilet as early as practical:
- Demolition, plumbing changes and inspection happen first, while the room is fully out of service.
- The toilet is reset on a temporary or finished floor as soon as the floor allows.
- Shower waterproofing, tile and grout follow; this is the phase where some households shower at a gym or with family.
- Vanity, glass and trim come last, when the room is already usable.
Our article on using your bathroom during a remodel has more tips. If disruption is the main worry, the job can be split into stages, such as fixing the shower now and replacing the vanity and floor later.
Five things we find in Palmetto bathrooms
1. Dated tile hiding wet walls
Older tub and shower surrounds were frequently built with materials that don't stand up to decades of daily showers. Once grout cracks or a corner caulk joint fails, water can migrate into the wall for years before anything looks wrong. When we remodel a shower, we remove the old surround down to the studs, replace damaged material and install cement board with a waterproofing membrane before any tile goes up.
2. A soft or uneven floor
A floor that flexes or tiles that sound hollow usually point to a long-running leak at the toilet or tub. Our guide on why bathroom floors feel soft explains the causes. The fix is to find the source, repair the substrate and then install durable bathroom flooring such as porcelain tile or a waterproof plank where it suits the room.
3. A toilet that's past its prime
Older toilets often use more water per flush and may rock on a failing seal. A toilet replacement is a good moment to check the flange and the side and front clearances, which matter in tight rooms.
4. A sink, faucet and vanity that waste space
Pedestal sinks and small vanities are common in older homes. Swapping in a vanity with drawers, or a wall-mounted unit that keeps floor space open, adds storage without enlarging the room. Updating bathroom sinks and faucets at the same time also lets us replace corroded shutoff valves.
5. No real ventilation
A window alone isn't enough in Florida humidity, especially in summer when the air outside is as damp as the air in the shower. Many older Palmetto bathrooms either have no fan or one that vents into the attic. We install exhaust fans sized to the room and ducted outside, and a timer switch helps the fan run long enough after each shower to clear the air.
Making a small bathroom feel bigger
Palmetto's hall baths are often the only full bathroom in the house, and many are tight. Strategies that work well in these rooms:
- Replacing the tub with a same-size shower and a clear glass panel
- Larger floor tiles with fewer grout lines
- A recessed niche instead of a hanging caddy
- Light wall colors and good lighting above the mirror
- Pocket or outswing doors where the layout allows

Waterfront Palmetto homes and flood zones
Terra Ceia, Snead Island and the streets near the river and bays put a lot of Palmetto homes close to the water. Homes in FEMA special flood hazard areas can face extra review when an improvement is large compared with the home's value, which can affect how much you do at once, so it's worth checking your flood zone before the design is set. Materials matter too: tile on cement board with a proper membrane and a solid-surface or quartz vanity top tolerate water far better than drywall and particleboard. Our guide to why waterproofing matters more than tile explains the layers.
When regrouting is enough, and nearby pages
If the tile in your bathroom is sound and only the grout is tired, tile and grout cleaning with regrouting may be all it needs. We also remodel bathrooms across the river in Bradenton and just east in Ellenton. For everything else we do in town, see our Palmetto service area page, and when you're ready we'll stop by to look at your bathroom and write up a free estimate.
