In a 55+ community, a bathroom has to do more than look good. We remodel Sun City Center bathrooms so they're safer and easier to use today, and still work if your mobility changes later.

Sun City Center has been a 55+ community since its founding in 1962, and that history shows in the bathrooms. Homes built in the early decades often have a tub-shower combination with a high wall to step over, low toilets, slippery glazed floor tile and lighting that seemed fine years ago but feels dim now. Later homes and villas may have larger bathrooms but still include a separate tub or a shower with a tall curb. For many residents, the question isn't whether the bathroom looks dated. It's whether it's still safe. Bathroom remodeling in Sun City Center, FL is mostly about accessibility and aging in place, planned around the way this community lives. We reach Sun City Center from our base in Bradenton.
A 2-Minute Bathroom Safety Check
Walk into your bathroom and answer yes or no. Each "no" is worth bringing up at your estimate:
- Can you get into the shower without stepping over a tub wall? If not, see tub-to-shower conversions.
- Is there a grab bar you can reach from the toilet and inside the shower?
- Can you sit down to shower if you're tired or unsteady?
- Is the toilet seat high enough to stand up without pushing hard? See toilet replacement.
- Does the floor feel secure underfoot when it's wet? See bathroom flooring.
- Can you turn on a light from the doorway, and is there a lit path from the bedroom at night? See lighting and ventilation.
- Can you reach soap, shampoo and towels without bending low or stretching overhead?
- Is the doorway free of a raised threshold you could catch a foot on?
Aging-in-Place Bathroom Upgrades, in Order of Impact
Not every bathroom needs every upgrade. Roughly in order of how much they do for everyday safety:
- Remove the step-over. A low-threshold or curbless shower in place of the tub, with a bench and a handheld shower on a slide bar.
- Add something solid to hold. Grab bars need solid blocking, so we add it during a remodel even where you don't want a bar yet.
- Raise what's too low. A comfort-height toilet with proper clearances, and a taller vanity.
- Make the floor forgiving. Slip-resistant tile and no thresholds between rooms.
- Turn up the light. Even vanity lighting, a light in the shower and contrast at edges.
The design details behind each of these, including clearances, turning space for a walker or wheelchair, valves and handle styles, are covered on our accessible bathroom remodeling page, so we won't repeat them here.
How Sun City Center home types shape the bathroom
The community's mix of housing changes what's possible:
- Single-family homes usually have the most room to work with. A hall bath can often lose its tub for a roomy walk-in shower, and an owner's bath may have space to widen the doorway or rework the vanity for a walker.
- Villas share walls, and sometimes plumbing runs, with the unit next door. Moving a drain or adding a recessed niche on a shared wall takes more care, so layouts often stay close to where they are, and the gains come from the shower entry, fixtures and floor.
- Condos have the tightest limits. Drains connect to shared stacks, the slab may be shared with the unit below, and recessing a floor for a curbless shower may not be allowed. A low-profile curb and a wide glass panel are often the practical answer.
Association approvals and scheduling
Many Sun City Center homeowners have an association to answer to before work begins. In practice the steps usually look like this:
- Request your association's renovation or alteration form and rules.
- Submit the scope, often with a description of any plumbing or electrical changes.
- Provide our certificate of insurance, which we'll send directly.
- Confirm allowed work hours, parking for the crew and where a dumpster or trailer can go.
- Schedule demolition and any water shutoffs around those rules and your neighbors.
Our guide to remodeling a condo bathroom walks through what associations typically ask for. With community activities filling many calendars, we also plan noisy demolition days with you, so they don't land on the morning you're hosting or heading out.
Curbless showers on a slab
Many residents ask for a fully curbless shower. On a concrete slab, that usually means recessing the floor in the shower area so it can slope to the drain while staying level with the rest of the room. It's very doable in a single-family home but takes more planning than a standard shower. Our article on why curbless showers take planning explains what's involved, and a walk-in shower with a low threshold is a good alternative when recessing is impractical.
Deciding on the tub
If you still enjoy baths, you don't have to give one up. Some households keep a tub in a second bathroom and convert the primary one. Our article on whether to replace a tub or convert to a shower can help you think it through before we visit.
For flooring, lighting, paint and other updates around the house, see our Sun City Center home remodeling page. We'll take as much time as you need at the visit and give you a free estimate for a bathroom that will serve you well for years.
